He proposed in a row boat in the middle of the lake
Bhavan proposed on Lake Union in Seattle, in a wooden row boat, out in the middle of the water with the city behind them.
It is the neatest answer I have seen to the oldest problem in proposal photography, which is how to find somewhere genuinely private in the middle of a city. He rented the boat from the Center for Wooden Boats at Lake Union Park, they rowed out together, and Evaro Studios shot the whole thing from shore at golden hour on a Friday evening in September. Working as a Lake Union proposal photographer from the shoreline, with the couple out on the water, is not the usual way to cover a proposal, and it worked.
Lake Union is the rare Seattle spot that gives you the skyline, the Space Needle, float homes, sailboats and open water in one frame. From the middle of it you are looking back at the whole city. And a boat is the only place in Seattle where two people can be genuinely alone outdoors on a Friday evening and still be six minutes from a parking spot.
THE PLAN
How you photograph a proposal on the water
The Center for Wooden Boats rents classic wooden row boats and small sailboats by the hour from Lake Union Park. No licence, no experience needed for a row boat. That is the whole trick behind this proposal. It looks elaborate and it is a rental and a pair of oars.
I did not get in the boat. Two people in a small row boat plus a photographer is a crowded, awkward boat and a very obvious surprise. They rowed out and I shot from the shoreline with a long lens, which keeps the boat to the two of them and keeps the surprise intact.
We shot at golden hour in the middle of September. Sunset was around half past seven, and the hour before it puts warm light on the glass downtown while the water goes flat and silver. Lake Union is busiest at exactly that hour, with kayaks, paddleboards and the seaplanes coming in, which sounds like a problem and is actually cover. One more small boat on the lake is invisible.

What happened after
He stopped rowing, shipped the oars and asked her in the middle of the lake. From the shore it was completely silent. You could see her hands go up, then the two of them leaning into the middle of the boat, and the boat rocking, and neither of them caring.
They took their time rowing back in, which is the part I would not change. Nobody was waiting for them and nobody was watching.
We finished on land with the skyline behind them and shot portraits until the light went, along the water and in the park. Bhavan had the full gallery four days later.

What the session includes
One hour of coverage, hidden for the proposal and then portraits right after, 40 hand edited images, one short reel, a champagne toast setup, and sneak peeks in three to five days. Seattle proposal sessions start at $600. The boat rental is separate and you book it yourself, directly with the Center for Wooden Boats.
While you're there
South Lake Union is walkable, and everything below is within about ten minutes of the dock.
The Center for Wooden Boats rents the row boats and the small sailboats, and it is where this proposal started. Book ahead for a weekend evening, they go quickly.
Lake Union Park is the green space around the dock, with the lawn and the model boat pond. It is also the easiest meeting point if you are pretending to just go for a walk.
MOHAI sits on the water at the edge of the park in the old naval armory, and it is a good excuse to already be down there.
Northwest Outdoor Center on the west side of the lake rents kayaks and paddleboards if a row boat is not your thing.
Gas Works Park is at the north end of the lake, ten minutes by car, and gives you the same skyline from the opposite shore.
Duke's Seafood on Westlake is the easy celebration dinner right on the water, a few minutes from the dock.

The hour before sunset. The downtown towers catch the last warm light and the water flattens out. The lake is busy at that hour with kayaks, paddleboards and seaplanes, which works in your favour, because one more small boat is invisible.
Where else around Lake Union is good for a proposal?
Gas Works Park on the north shore for the full skyline, Lake Union Park itself if you want to stay on land, and the waterfront above the park for portraits after. All three are within the same ten minutes.
